A real challenge facing the utility industry is the age old adage of garbage in, garbage out. In other words, for a user of any data set to make good decisions which are based on the informational data at hand, he must have the real time ability to search and quantify the data’s integrity, including its source, informational accuracy and level of precision. We call this the data “pedigree.” When collecting, storing, and retrieving data either for, into, and from a single source, it is a relatively easy task to display the data in its original positional references. However, when the scenario arises that data from multiple sources and field backgrounds are collected using various protocols, business methodologies, hardware and software and stored in different systems and then retrieved and displayed onto different source graphics, the end user is much more likely to be faced with the real possibility of data degradation.
